Safety:
Tennessee Valley Recycling, LLC
Company History:
Tennessee Valley Recycling (TVR) is a company whose founding dates back to 1907. A combination of several metal recycling and scrap management companies, TVR operates full-service scrap metal processing facilities, including two large auto shredding plants. Serving hundreds of industries of all sizes throughout the southeast from the Tennessee River Valley, TVR works with everything from aluminum cans to automobiles.
The company has approximately 200 employees, of which roughly 170 are doing factory and recycling work involving heavy machinery and other activities requiring the utmost care and safety precautions.
Relationship with Johnston & Associates:
TVR and Johnston & Associates began their working relationship six years ago.
While TVR had a good safety record, they recognized the value of creating the safest work environment possible for their employees, and that the company’s size warranted more safety precautions to ensure government compliance.
How Johnston & Associates has helped:
Johnston & Associates provides a variety of services for TVR, among them:
- Safety consultant John Giglione performs monthly on-site inspections. These inspections are unannounced and follow OSHA guidelines to ensure proper compliance. He then provides a detailed report of areas needing to be addressed.
- Reworking TVR’s written safety program for compliance with federal and state laws.
- The creation of OSHA 10 modeled safety programs.
- M.O.S.T.® training – focusing on employee behavioral safety training and accountability
- Annual supplementary training for each employee
- Implementation of formalized forklift and personal protective equipment training

Claims Management:
Averitt Express, Inc.
Company History:
Averitt Express was founded in 1958 and remained a relatively small company until 1971 when it was purchased by Gary Sasser. A general commodities freight carrier throughout the Southeast, Southwest and Midwest, they also specialize in international logistics and supply chain.
Since 1971, the company has grown from two associates, three tractors, and five trailers to 9,000 employees, 4,000 tractors, and 12,000 trailers.
Relationship with Johnston & Associates:
Johnston & Associates has been working with Averitt Express for over 18 years. Initially, Ron Johnston did risk management and workers’ compensation claims consultation. Averitt Express managed their own claims, which were self-administered. Johnston & Associates now handles Averitt Express’ TPA claims in Texas and provides medical bill review and claims management services.
How Johnston & Associates has helped:
In addition to their medical bill review service, Johnston & Associates was able to uniquely help Averitt Express with their claims management in the state of Texas. Because Texas allows companies to opt-out of the state-regulated workers’ compensation insurance program, Johnston & Associates helped Averitt Express evaluate whether opting out was the best course of action.
Once the determination was made to become a non-subscriber, Johnston & Associates developed a plan to manage the company’s work-related injury claims as the third party administrator. Denise Cardella is the Claims Supervisor whose expertise allows her to handle all third party administration of the claims cases and benefit administration for Averitt Express.
